Root Canal Treatments

Also known as Endodontic treatment is used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected and it cannot be filled with a composite filling. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form and the tooth may have to be removed. Root Canal Treatment may also be indicated in persons that have suffered traumatic injury to the tooth.

Sometimes no symptoms are present; however, signs you may need a root canal include:

  • Severe toothache pain upon chewing or application of pressure

  • Prolonged sensitivity/pain to heat or cold temperatures (after the hot or cold has been removed)

  • Discoloration (a darkening) of the tooth

  • Swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums

  • A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums which is referred to as a dental abscess.

After the root canal is completed the tooth will have to be restored most time s with what is known as a dental Crown. This serves to protect the tooth and prevent any further breakdown of the tooth.
